WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast was big news in the mainstream media on Friday after a Media Event at The Star Gold Coast featured Shane Warne and his son Jackson, Rob Campbell and WPT’s own Lynn Gilmartin, to officially launch the event.
The media buzz created can only boost the number of Poker players throughout Australia and New Zealand converging on The Star Gold Coast to participate in the Series.
The $750 Opening Event certainly did not disappoint with a tremendous 492 entries generating a prizepool of $332,100. WPT Anchor Lynn Gilmartin, who now calls the Gold Coast home, welcomed the players on the first break for both Day 1A and 1B.
Meanwhile hubby Angel Guillen, second in the inaugural 2019 WPT Australia Opening Event, worked on going one better to bring home the bacon for the soon to be growing family. Alas Lynn watching over Angel’s shoulder was not enough to see him reaching Day 2 so Angel will set his sights on winning one of the nine remaining numbered events.
Full houses were the order of the day both on and off the tables for both Day 1A and 1B with the Star Gold Coast’s 24 poker tables all in operation creating a poker festival atmosphere not seen in major Australian Casinos in well over a year.
77 players will return today to play down to a winner and 62 will be in the money. The winner will take home a bank balance boosting 65K! The overall chip leader by a single 1k chip coming into Day 2 is Matt Yarham sitting on 343,000.
On Day 1A 36 survived from 221 starters and the top 5 are as follows:
Yuwei WEI 330,000
Sam ADAMS 308,000
Dwan SETTON 301,000
Anthony CIERCO 264,000

Day 1B saw 41 find a bag from a larger 271 entry field and once again here are the top 5:

Jack MARDANBEIGI 342,000
Joshua SMITH 281,000

The Day 2 action gets underway at 11.30am and is expected to proceed well into the evening before we crown our first WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast champion.
Event #2, the Single Day 2k Event is also on today’s schedule with a 2.30pm start. Multiple re-entry is available for this event and registration is open till 6.50pm.
Even with the fabulous news on Thursday that QLD health will allow full ring for tournaments throughout the Series, some side events and the Main Event are still expected to go to Alternates so players not yet at The Star Gold Coast are encouraged to register online via https://www.starpoker.com.au/registration. Bear in mind that chips for all registered players will be placed out at the start of play.
