Canadian turned naturalized Australian Mike Maddocks will take the chip lead into the final day of the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast main event with just 10 players remaining. Maddocks emerged from the field after a gruelling 13 hours of play on Day 2 that saw the field whittled down from 165 to the unofficial final table.

It is also largest prize pool for a tournament at The Star Gold Coast at $1,502,550, beating the $1,480,500 prizepool from WPT Australia in 2019.

New Zealander Simon Thwaites flew in today especially for the event and took the major honours in the 247 entry field, in the process denying Idris Hassan from achieving an amazing feat of going 2 from 2 after his great win in the 492 entry Opening Event.

Given the challenges brought on by the global health crisis, it drew a substantial 1,410 entries across thirteen events and amassed an overall grand prize pool of VNđ 17,866,042,000 (~US$ 774,960).

After ten and a half levels of intense competition, the race ended with the final 9 players determined. Vietnam’s Lý Đắc Dũng bagged 2,630,000 (65 bb) to earn the leader’s status.

Bringing everyone in was the featured VNđ 4 billion (~US$ 173,500) guaranteed Main Event with Day 1B up on deck. After nine rounds of late registration, 86 entered (67 uniques, 19 re-entries), and by bagging time, only 15 remained.

After 15 rounds of scheduled play, only five players remained. They will have a three day break before returning for Day 2.
